- The novel The Open Door is a milestone in the writing of Arab women. Latifa El-Zayat is an authentic writer. The quest for freedom was not portrayed as an easy and clear path, but embodied it with its upfalls, difficulties, and pitfalls, as well as with its splendor and serenity. She wrote the open door in all her texts, so she opened the door for generations of women writers to join her and continue on the path Radwa Ashour Brief Leila is an intelligent, energetic girl who lives in a traditional society that expects nothing but submission and obedience from women. But Leila is not ready to give up easily, and she fights for her freedom as a human being, and she also engages in the national movement for the liberation of her country. As Egypt boils and revolts during the 1940s and 1950s and faces stumbles and victories, we live with Leila her hopes, defeats and victories in her personal life for the sake of the sincere love she aspires to. A wonderful novel that moves with astonishing skill between the intimate and the public, between the biography of the individual and the history of the homeland.
